Research

BGC is involved in scientific research on all seven of Earth's continents as well as on the Moon and Mars. Topics of BGC's research include:

  • Hominin biological and behavioral evolution.

  • Nature and causes of past climate change on Earth

  • Ages and causes of mass extinctions

  • Volcanic processes, including pyroclastic eruptions, flood volcanism, oceanic volcanism, and volcanic hazards

  • Calibration of the biological, geological, and magnetic polarity time scales

  • Refining dating methods and developing new ones

  • Tectonic evolution of the Earth, including continental rifting, collision, and causes and rates of mountain building

  • Impacts of meteoroids on the Earth and Moon

BGC scientists collaborate with scientists at more than 100 different academic, government, and private institutions around the world. In addition to carrying out laboratory analysis of samples collected by themselves and colleagues at other institutions, BGC scientists have conducted geologic field research in more than 35 countries and Antarctica. Results of BGC research are published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, books, and other media (BGC Bibliography).

BGC is funded by private donations and grants from the National Science Foundation and other agencies. If you are interested in supporting BGC's work click here, or email info@bgc.org.  Contributions to BGC are tax deductible under section 501 (c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Service Code.
